Beijing Slams America of ‘Contradictory Stances’ Over Tariff Threat
Donald Trump’s most recent ultimatum to introduce an extra 100% tariff on products from China has been described as a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, per the Beijing administration.
A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that Beijing could introduce its own undisclosed “responsive actions” if the American leader follows through on his warning, noting that the country was “unafraid” of a potential trade conflict.
On Friday, Trump retaliated at China’s decision to tighten its regulations for foreign shipments of critical elements, alleging China of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.
Additionally, he vowed to pull out of a planned meeting with Chinese leader Xi, which was expected to take place during a conference in Seoul later this month.
Trump’s comments on last Friday unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index dropping 2.7%, marking its largest decline since April.
The president’s words revived apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.
In May, the two sides had consented to drop significant levies on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the economic powers.
As a result, United States levies on Chinese goods incurring an added import tax compared with the beginning of 2025, while American products entering the country are subject to a import levy.
China’s latest remarks – published by the relevant government department in the form of official answers to press queries – reflected rhetoric from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.
Officials denounced United States controls on semiconductors and chips while defending the country’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “normal actions” to ensure state interests and that of the global community.
Their representative said that for “a long time”, the US had “overstretched the concept of state security, misused export control measures and “adopted unfair treatments against China.
“Using” tariff threats is not the correct approach to interact with China,” the official said.
“Beijing’s stance” on a trade conflict has remained consistent: we wish to avoid one, but we are fearless of one.”
The previous week, China revealed it was tightening overseas sale regulations on key elements and other materials essential to advanced tech manufacturing.
The action was viewed as a significant step, as the state refines about 90% of the world’s rare earths, which are utilized in goods such as photovoltaic modules and handheld devices.
Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being seen by analysts as a strategy of bolstering negotiating stances prior to future trade talks.
Is not yet known whether a talks between Trump and China’s leader, planned at a summit in the Republic of Korea later this month, will go ahead.
