The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
