Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest certain decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
